Resonant Breathing is a slow, rhythmic breathing technique usually practised at around five to six breaths per minute. Instead of concentrating on making one part of the breath longer than another, the emphasis is on establishing a smooth, continuous rhythm.
A common starting pattern is to inhale for around five seconds and exhale for around five seconds. That produces approximately six complete breathing cycles per minute, considerably slower than a typical resting breathing rate.
What makes Resonant Breathing particularly interesting is the relationship between breathing and the cardiovascular system. Breathing naturally influences heart rate and blood pressure, and at certain slow breathing frequencies these rhythms can become more strongly coupled.
You may also encounter the terms resonance frequency breathing and coherent breathing. They're closely related, but they aren't always used to mean exactly the same thing. Coherent breathing often uses a standard slow rate, commonly around five to six breaths per minute, whereas resonance frequency approaches may attempt to identify an individual's particular breathing frequency.
Why does Resonant Breathing work?
Your heart doesn't beat at perfectly regular intervals. The small variation in time between successive heartbeats is known as heart rate variability, or HRV.
Breathing contributes to this variation through a phenomenon called respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Heart rate typically increases during inhalation and decreases during exhalation.
Another important mechanism is the baroreflex, one of the body's systems for regulating blood pressure. Pressure-sensitive receptors detect changes in blood pressure and trigger compensatory changes in heart rate and vascular activity.
When breathing is slowed to approximately 0.1 Hz, around six breaths per minute, the respiratory cycle can interact particularly strongly with these cardiovascular oscillations. This can produce large, regular fluctuations in heart rate and increase some measures of HRV during the exercise.
This is the basis for resonance frequency breathing and related HRV biofeedback techniques.
However, “six breaths per minute” isn't a magical number. Individual resonance frequencies vary, often somewhere around 4.5 to 6.5 breaths per minute, and formally identifying an individual's resonance frequency usually involves measuring physiological responses at several breathing rates.
For everyday practice, a comfortable rhythm around five to six breaths per minute provides a practical starting point without requiring specialised equipment.
How to do Resonant Breathing
Find a comfortable seated or lying position and allow your normal breathing to settle.
- Breathe in gently through your nose for around five seconds.
- Breathe out smoothly for around five seconds.
- Move directly into the next inhale without deliberately holding your breath.
- Continue the continuous rhythm for around five minutes.
A 5-second inhale / 5-second exhale produces six breaths per minute.
You don't need to hit that timing exactly. If five seconds feels uncomfortable, use a slightly shorter breath. Once the technique feels familiar, you can experiment with a slower rhythm.
The objective isn't to reach the lowest breathing rate possible. It's to establish a slow rhythm that remains comfortable and sustainable.
What should it feel like?
Resonant Breathing should feel smooth and almost continuous.
Rather than thinking of the inhale and exhale as separate events, imagine the breath gradually changing direction. The inhale gently becomes the exhale, and the exhale gently becomes the next inhale.
There shouldn't be deliberate pauses at either end.
You also shouldn't need to take unusually large breaths simply because you're breathing more slowly. Keep the volume comfortable and allow the pace to do the work.
After a few minutes, you may find that you need to concentrate less on the count because your breathing has settled naturally into the rhythm.
Common mistakes
Breathing too deeply
Slower breathing doesn't require larger breaths. Taking unnecessarily deep breaths can make you feel uncomfortable or light-headed.
Focus on slowing the rhythm rather than increasing the amount of air you're moving.
Treating six breaths per minute as a universal target
Around six breaths per minute is a useful starting point, but individual physiology varies. A slightly faster or slower rhythm may feel more comfortable.
Trying to breathe as slowly as possible
Four breaths per minute isn't automatically better than six. If slowing further creates air hunger or tension, increase the breathing rate.
Adding breath holds
Traditional Resonant Breathing is generally continuous. Deliberately adding holds changes the respiratory pattern and moves towards techniques such as Box Breathing.
Obsessing over the timer
The timing establishes the rhythm, but eventually the breathing should feel relatively natural. Constantly checking whether every breath lasted exactly five seconds can make an otherwise simple technique unnecessarily demanding.
When should you use Resonant Breathing?
Resonant Breathing can be useful when you want a sustained period of slow, rhythmic breathing rather than a short, highly structured exercise.
It works well as a dedicated breathing practice, before meditation or during periods when you want to spend several minutes deliberately slowing your breathing.
It's also particularly relevant if you're interested in the relationship between breathing and HRV. Resonance frequency breathing forms an important component of some HRV biofeedback protocols, where physiological measurements are used to identify and train breathing patterns.
You don't need HRV equipment to practise slow Resonant Breathing, however. For general breathing practice, a comfortable five-to-six-breath-per-minute rhythm is enough to explore the technique.
When might Resonant Breathing not be the best choice?
If you're completely new to paced breathing, maintaining a five- or six-second inhale and exhale may initially feel too slow. Equal Breathing at a shorter count can provide an easier introduction.
If you're specifically trying to emphasise a longer exhalation, Extended Exhale changes the balance of the breathing cycle rather than keeping it approximately symmetrical.
If you want a breathing technique that occupies more of your attention, Box Breathing provides a more structured four-phase sequence.
And if breathing mechanics themselves feel uncomfortable or you're repeatedly lifting your shoulders and upper chest, it may make sense to explore Diaphragmatic Breathing before concentrating on maintaining a particularly slow frequency.
Resonant Breathing is therefore most useful when slow, continuous rhythm is what you're trying to achieve.
Resonant Breathing vs Equal Breathing
Resonant Breathing and Equal Breathing can look almost identical.
For example:
Equal Breathing: 4 seconds in → 4 seconds out
Resonant Breathing: 5 seconds in → 5 seconds out
Both can use equal inhalation and exhalation, and neither requires breath holds.
The difference is primarily in the objective.
Equal Breathing is defined by the relationship between the two phases: the inhale and exhale are approximately equal. It can therefore be practised at several different breathing rates.
Resonant Breathing is concerned primarily with breathing frequency and its interaction with cardiovascular rhythms. Equal inhale and exhale timings are commonly used because they provide a simple way of maintaining that slow frequency, but equality itself isn't the defining feature.
This means a 5:5 breathing pattern could reasonably be described as both Equal Breathing and Resonant Breathing.
If you're new to breathing exercises and simply want a balanced rhythm, Equal Breathing is the simpler concept. If you're specifically interested in sustained slow breathing and its relationship with HRV and cardiovascular regulation, Resonant Breathing is the more useful framework.
Related breathing techniques
Equal Breathing
Equal Breathing shares the symmetrical inhale-exhale pattern commonly used in Resonant Breathing but doesn't require such a slow breathing frequency. It's a useful starting point if five-to-six breaths per minute feels difficult.
Diaphragmatic Breathing
Diaphragmatic Breathing focuses on the mechanics underlying each breath rather than its frequency. Comfortable diaphragmatic breathing can provide a useful foundation before introducing a slower paced rhythm.
Extended Exhale
Extended Exhale deliberately makes the exhale longer than the inhale. It's worth exploring if you like slow breathing but prefer an asymmetrical pattern rather than the approximately equal phases commonly used during Resonant Breathing.
Box Breathing
Box Breathing introduces breath holds and gives all four phases of the respiratory cycle a defined duration. This creates a more structured experience than the continuous rhythm of Resonant Breathing.
What does the science say?
Resonance frequency breathing has a stronger and more clearly defined physiological research base than many named breathing techniques because it has been studied extensively within heart rate variability biofeedback.
Research by Lehrer and colleagues helped establish the concept of an individual's cardiovascular resonance frequency. When people breathe at approximately 0.1 Hz, usually somewhere around 4.5 to 6.5 breaths per minute, heart rate oscillations can become synchronised with respiratory and blood-pressure rhythms, producing large increases in heart-rate variability during practice.
A systematic review by Lehrer and Gevirtz described the mechanisms underlying HRV biofeedback, including interactions between respiration, respiratory sinus arrhythmia and the baroreflex. The authors proposed that repeatedly stimulating this system through resonance frequency breathing may help train autonomic regulatory processes.
A later meta-analysis by Goessl and colleagues examined HRV biofeedback across 24 studies involving 484 participants. The analysis found large reductions in self-reported stress and anxiety, although the interventions generally involved HRV biofeedback protocols rather than breathing alone. That distinction matters: these results shouldn't be interpreted as proving that simply breathing at six breaths per minute will produce the same effects.
Research has also investigated fixed-rate coherent breathing without personalised biofeedback. A 2023 randomised controlled trial involving 400 participants compared coherent breathing at approximately 5.5 breaths per minute with a structurally similar breathing exercise at 12 breaths per minute. Both groups improved in psychological outcomes over time, but the slower coherent-breathing group didn't show significantly greater improvements in stress, anxiety, depression or wellbeing.
That finding provides a useful counterbalance to stronger claims sometimes made about coherent or Resonant Breathing. The physiological effects of breathing around cardiovascular resonance are measurable, particularly in HRV, but translating those acute physiological changes into superior psychological outcomes isn't necessarily straightforward.
The evidence therefore supports the physiological basis of resonance frequency breathing particularly well, while evidence for broader wellbeing outcomes remains more nuanced.

The resonance-frequency and HRV-biofeedback literature provides strong evidence that breathing frequency can influence cardiovascular oscillations and HRV. Evidence that these physiological changes necessarily produce superior psychological outcomes is less conclusive, particularly when breathing is practised without biofeedback.
